Severe Rat Infestation Found in Fenway Area

Over 100 rats and over 50 burrows found in two Fenway properties.

Two properties in the Fenway area are home to over 100 rats, according to CBS Boston. City inspectors found over 50 burrows at 26 Hemenway Street and 24 Havilland Street.

The conditions in this area are ideal for rats to multiply and thrive according to Boston Inspectional Services Director of Environmental Services John Meaney. The rats make their nests near the shrubbery for protection and near the garbage storage area for a food source.

Both Fenway Residential Properties and Boston Properties Management have been cited by the city. Inspectors have ordered the owners to hire licensed pest management companies, to clean and contain the trash storage areas and maintain the landscaping on the properties.

Mayor Tom Menino told CBS Boston he was “outraged by the issue.” With school starting in less than a month, the City of Boston will have an influx of students coming to town and a rat problem to get under control. The two properties are both popular amongst student renters.
