Foxborough's Derek Arnold, UMass Lowell Hockey Headed to Frozen Four

Storybook season for Foxborough's Derek Arnold and UMass Lowell hockey team to begin next chapter in next week's NCAA Frozen Four.

Foxborough native Derek Arnold and his UMass Lowell hockey team are headed to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the NCAA Frozen Four.

No. 1 UMass Lowell defeated No. 2 New Hampshire, 2-0 in Saturday night’s NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional Championship in front of 8,357 at the Verizon Wireless Arena, according to UMass Lowell athletics.

With the victory, Arnold and the River Hawks will take the ice in the school’s first ever Frozen Four appearance on Friday, Apr. 11 against Yale (19-12-3), a 4-1 winner over North Dakota in the West Regional in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Arnold was instrumental in getting the River Hawks to Saturday night’s NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional Championship. The Foxborough native, nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” by his coaches and teammates, netted a pair of game-winning goals enroute to UMass Lowell’s first Hockey East Championship in 29 years.

Arnold finished Saturday’s game with no points and five shots on net. On Friday, he netted a goal in a 6-1 victory over No. 4 Wisconsin in the Northeast Regional first round.

This season, Arnold has played in 36 regular season games, scoring 11 goals and gathering 16 assists for 27. As a sophomore, he appeared in 38 games with 34 points, 17 goals and 17 assists.
