The Patriots will play wild card weekend after suffering one of the most stunning upsets of the Bill Belichick era. New England lost to the Miami Dolphins, 27-24, Sunday afternoon in Gillette Stadium.

The loss drops the Patriots to 12-4 and, more importantly, the No. 3 seed in the AFC thanks to the Chiefs' win over the Chargers. In falling out of the top two seeds, the Patriots will forfeit a first-round bye and will likely have to win two road games — one in Kansas City, one in Baltimore — to make the Super Bowl.

New England will host Tennessee next weekend.

The Patriots have never won the Super Bowl when having to play the first week of the playoffs. It will be their first time playing wild card weekend since 2009.

The Dolphins, who entered the game 4-11, were 17-point underdogs to New England. ESPN said it was tied for the biggest upset in the last two decades.

The Patriots were such heavy favorites that won person bet $74,430 to beat the Dolphins — a bet that only would have netted the person $4,651.85, according to Darren Rovell.

With rumors swirling around the future of 42-year-old Tom Brady, the bitter defeat could have been his last regular-season home game as a member of the Patriots.
