Framingham Public School students will not spend all day in the classroom tomorrow, Sept. 9.

Framingham Public Schools Superintendent Stacy Scott called an early release day Wednesday, due to the high heat and humidity.

“Because the current heat wave is not expected to break before the end of this week and some of our schools cannot lower their temperature to a safe level, we are going to have an early release,” posted the district on its website late Tuesday afternoon.

Temperatures in several schools in the district were in the 90s and some above 100 degrees.

With the early release only breakfast will be served at Framingham Public Schools. There will be no lunch served.

After school day care will be provided only at the King and Wilson Elementary schools.

Framingham High School athletic and evening programming will continue as scheduled.

Although Framingham Public Schools called an early release - one of only two public school districts in the Commonwealth as of midnight - several private and public schools in town will remain open all day on Wednesday.

Wednesday, Sept. 9 is the official first day of class for Marian High students. The Principal emailed Framingham Patch to say the school will be open all day with buses available in the morning and afternoon.

The Christa McAuliffe Charter School in Framingham will also have classes all day for its 6-7-8 grade students, said executive director Kristin Harrison.

Saint Bridget School will be open all day on Wednesday as well.

Keefe Technical had already scheduled an early release day for Sept. 9, due to professional development.

Around 3:30 p.m. Scott told Framingham Patch he would make a decision later Tuesday afternoon, on whether the district would call an unusual heat early release. He said if an early release day is called, he would inform staff and put out word to parents and students via the connect-ed system around 6 p.m.

Boston broke a record for temperature today. Temperatures at Logan Airport reached 96 degrees just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, breaking the previous record high of 95 for this date, the National Weather Service reports.

The extreme heat is expected to last through tomorrow, with high temperatures in the mid-90s Wednesday.

Relief is in site for Thursday, with highs expected to be only in the 80s, followed by the mid-70s on Friday and through the weekend.

Scott said with temperatures forecasted even higher tomorrow than today, he wanted to make sure students and staff were safe, thus why considering the early release.

If an early release does happen, PTO meetings and events at night, at the schools, do not have to be cancelled, said Scott.

Also athletics events - Wednesday is the opening of the season for many Framingham High sports teams - can go on, he said.

But coaches can make the decision to postpone the game due to heat, if they want, said Scott.

Framingham High is without an athletic director presently. Scott said he hoped to name an interim this week, possibly as early as today.
