Potter Road Student's Flag To Represent Massachusetts

The theme of the national flag design competition in 2016 was 'the power of art.'

A Potter Road Elementary student’s design for an art flag won the state’s competition, and is flying at the State’s transportation building in Boston.

Jack Gladstein, a fifth grade student at Potter Road Elementary had his design chosen to be the 2016 Youth Art Month State Flag for Massachusetts.

This year’s theme was the power of art.

Gladstein explained his design to the Framingham School Committee Monday night.

He said his art strong flag design turns the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts into a flexing arm muscle, to represent strong.

Art teacher Donna Maxwell said she gave her fifth grade students the option of designing a flag. Maxwell said there were about 30 students who “passionately” worked on this project for a “very short amount of time.” She said students came in during their lunch time and gave up recess to work on their flag.

Maxwell said they came up with their own idea “using text and pictures.”

The elementary art teacher called Gladstein an “art ambassador.”

March is National Youth Art Month.

The Massachusetts Youth Art Month exhibit is on display until March 31 at the state’s transportation building. The public can view daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is closed on the weekend.

To promote Youth Art Month, the Council for Art Education coordinates national activities, including the state flag progra,.

Each state coordinates a flag design contest, with the winning design made into a flag for display in the Youth Art Month Museum at the National Art Education Association National Convention in March.

Gladstein’s Massachusetts flag will be flown at the Convention in Chicago next month with 49 other state flags.
