3. On this day in 1967 and 1978, two Hollywood icons died tragically. In fact, their deaths are arguably better-known more than their careers. Jayne Mansfield, perhaps best known today as Mariska Hargitay’s mother,was killed at 34 when the car she was riding in went under the rear of a truck. Did you know that her death may have saved lives? The government eventually required a strong bar made of steel tubing to be installed on all tractor-trailers. This bar is also known as a Mansfield bar.
4. And in 1978, “Hogan’s Heroes’’ star Bob Crane was murdered at 49. The crime remains unsolved. Sadly, his death also killed off his good guy image, as his apparent demons came to light. We think Greg Kinnear was robbed of an Oscar nomination for his haunting portrayal of Crane in “Auto Focus.’’
