Town MCAS Scores Above State Averages

Students exceed state numbers in math, English language arts and science and technology.

Grafton students exceeded the state average in all categories of the MCAS tests.

Results were released today.

In English/language arts, 79 percent of Grafton students across all grade levels tested scored in the proficient category or higher. The state average is 69 percent.

In mathematics, 70 percent of Grafton students scored in the proficient category or higher, as opposed to 58 percent statewide.

Students especially excelled in the science and technology category. In the fifth grade, 69 percent scored in the proficient or higher category. The state average was 50 percent.

In the eighth grade, 71 percent of students scored in the proficient or higher category, nearly double the state average of 39 percent.

In grade 10, 87 percent of students scored in the proficient or higher category. The state average was 67 percent.

"Thus far we have only completed an initial review of the aggregate MCAS data at each grade level,'' said assistant superintendent of schools Lucille Boutiette. "We are pleased that the percentage of Gtafton students scoring at the Proficient or Advanced levels continues to be above State percentages.''

During the next few weeks, "district and building level administrators and teachers will thoroughly review the details of the MCAS data at each grade level to determine strengths and weaknesses, identify possible curriculum implications and develop a plan to address any identified needs."
