The barred owl, which suffered a broken wing, is doing well by all standards, reports Thomas Keppeler, associate director for communications at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.

The owl is eating well and seems comfortable, Keppeler said.

The injured barred owl was saved from the breakdown lane of the Massachusetts Turnpike Saturday by Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Golenski and two environmental police officers.

The bird, believed to be a male based on its weight, underwent successful surgery at the wildlife clinic.

Its broken wing now has surgical pins in it. As its wing heals, he will eventually have the pins removed.

The next round of X-rays, to be taken in a few weeks, will reveal more, Keppeler said.
