Mystery Solved: It's a Fishing Spider

They hunt for their prey at the water's edge.

Turns out the mysterious creature we photographed at Hovey Pond is a fishing spider.

These spiders, which can be up to an inch long, wait by the edge of the water to detect ripples from their prey. They then inject venom to kill and eat their prey. 

They mainly eat insects, but sometimes can grab small fish.
