
They’re not banned in Boston _ at least not yet _ but New York City restaurants, delis, movie theaters, stadiums and street carts may be prohibited from selling sodas and sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed the ban in response to concerns about obesity and other health issues that the consumption of sugar can cause.
The ban does not apply to diet drinks, fruit juice, dairy products and alcoholic beverages.

Others have argued that this is a decision that should be made by the consumer, not the government. And since consumers could purchase several smaller-sized beverages instead, some argue that a ban would have no health impact.
