Small Ships Take to the Lake

Youngsters float their homemade boats.

About a dozen boats took to Silver Lake on the Fourth of July as youngsters floated their creations. The boats were made from recyclable materials.

The event was part of the town's efforts to draw people to the lake, said Brenda Armstrong, director of swimming lessons at the lake. Other upcoming ideas include a sand castle contest in August and a fall painting event in October.

"We're looking for different events to promote the lake,'' she said.

This one appeared to be a hit. One youngster screamed, "The boat contest!'' as the event began.

The boats bore a range of themes, including monkeys, Barbies and the U.S. Marines.

The Marines boat was made by Armstrong to honor her son, who is in the service.

Lifeguard Julie Hugunen called it the "Silver Lake boat.''

And in a move that Hollywood could have scripted, a military flyover flew over the lake just as the event was winding down.

The beach crowd cheered.
