The fresh snow on the ground and temperatures barely eclipsing the freezing mark did not keep the crowds away. Andre Deschenes waited in line for about five minutes for his first frozen treat of the year.
And he was one of the earlier arrivals.
As soon as school let out at 1:45 p.m., he and Riches made the dash to the ice cream stand.
“Everyone in town comes,’’ he said. “I’ve seen people I haven’t seen in months.’’
Carissa Couture has been driving by the business for weeks, checking out the countdown to opening sign and looking forward to opening day.Â
For some of the youngsters, the ice cream ritual begins a fun night of hanging out and having a good time together.
“I’m really excited about it,’’ said Jake Roberts, 14. “All my friends are here. I want to hang out and get some ice cream with them.’’
For Timmery Kuck, the first day at Swirls & Scoops signals one welcome milestone.
She smiles wide. “Spring is here,’’ she said.
