But as the seniors scooped out their ice cream and selected their toppings, they also enjoyed the treat of being in a cool place on one of the year's hottest days.
The free sundaes were not the only day-brightener. The room was festooned in balloons and flowers, courtesy of Teleflora and Floral Elegance.

"Ice cream, flowers, ice cream, patriotic music ... How much better can you get?'' Drumm said.

But clearly, the ice cream took center stage.
Pauline St. Amand said she enjoys her ice cream all year long.
"It's always in my freezer,'' she said.
And Dick Novick said he loves ice cream and made the trip just for a cold treat.
So why, then, was he only indulging in a modest bowl of vanilla?
"This is my third one, OK?'' he said. "The first one had everything on it.''
