The Explorer Post 2035 has been working very hard at obtaining their First Responder certifications, which is a prerequisite for them to be able to assist on the fireground.
The First Responder class, which was taught by Post Advisors and EMTs Dave Runyan and Brian McCann, consisted of more than 28 hours of lectures, labs, and practical sessions. The post members learned the skills necessary to identify and treat immediate life threats including cardiac/respiratory arrest, foreign body airway obstruction, severe bleeding and shock, and anaphylaxis.
They participated in hands-on labs to learn how to properly perform CPR, use an AED, perform patient assessments, obtain vital signs, immobilize patients, and assist with medication administration. They will be taking their final exam today.
