4-Alarm Fire Leaves Hamilton Couple Homeless

The blaze was reported around 4 p.m.

A 4-alarm fire on Bridge Street on Wednesday night has left a Hamilton couple homeless.

The blaze was reported around 4 p.m. at 279 Bridge St., according to emergency radio broadcasts. Heavy smoke was reportedly showing from the building, and firefighters were having trouble getting access to water. Firefighters were busy battling the blaze for hours, as the fire reignited several times.

Home owner Fred Hammond told New England Cable News that he was home when the fire started. "We heard an explosion," he said. Hammond, his wife Gae and their two dogs were able to get out of the house safely. Gae Hammond's father was an artist, and neighbors helped the couple save as much of his artwork as they could.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
