Gordon College's Entire Faculty Senate Resigns

The seven resignations seem to be in response to alleged discrimination against a professor.

WENHAM, MA – After a Gordon College professor was allegedly denied a promotion because she criticized the college's stance on same-sex relationships, the Boston Globe reports that all seven members of the college's faculty senate have resigned from the senate.

The resignation is apparently in protest of the college denying Professor Margaret DeWeese-Boyd a promotion. According to the Globe, DeWeese-Boyd alleged in a complaint to the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination that she was denied the promotion because she's consistently and openly opposed the college's policy.

The faculty senate had unanimously supported DeWeese-Boyd's promotion, and DeWeese-Boyd's lawyer told the Globe they resigned because President D. Michael Lindsay ignores their recommendations for promotions.

In a statement regarding the resignations, Gordon College noted that the chairperson of the faculty senate did not mention any specific promotion decision or faculty member.

"Gordon’s president and provost were quite surprised to learn just a few hours before a regular monthly faculty meeting last Wednesday that the seven members of the Senate had decided to resign from their elected roles as faculty representatives in the promotion and tenure review process," read the statement from Gordon College. "The administration continues to believe that a highly effective Senate facilitates the flourishing of Gordon’s faculty and will work with them to resolve the impasse in this situation, especially where perspectives clearly differ on the process and outcomes."
