Hamilton Finds Harmful Algae Bloom In Chebacco Lake

The bloom of cyanobacteria can be harmful to humans and pets if ingested and can cause irritation when it touches skin.

HAMILTON, MA — The Hamilton Board of Health is asking residents to be vigilant before entering the water at Chebacco Lake, or any fresh water body. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Environmental Toxicology Program confirmed that harmful algal bloom of cyanobacteria was present in the lake.

The bloom of cyanobacteria can be harmful to humans and pets if ingested and cause irritation when it touches skin. Ingesting small amounts of cyanobacteria or cyanotoxin can cause gastrointestinal issues and ingesting larger amounts may cause liver or neurological damage.

The town warned that small children and pets are more susceptible to the effects of cyanotoxins than adults.
