An effort by Massachusetts officials to shelter migrant children who cross the U.S. southern border has been called off by the U.S. Department ofl Health and Human Services, according to the Boston Herald.
In July, Gov. Deval Patrick said the commonwealth would offer to house “a few hundred” migrant children from Central America. The offer came after the Obama Administration asked Massachusetts and other states to help house 52,000-some children who have crossed the U.S. border since last October; the federal government asked for states to offer locations with 90,000 square feet and enough space for to up to 1,000 refugees. The proposal aimed to house children at Joint Base in Bourne or Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee.
