Sixth District Has a New Congressman, Hamilton Backs Moulton

Seth Moulton will succeed U.S. Rep. John Tierney as the Sixth District representative in the U.S. House of Representative, according to the Moulton campaign.

Moulton’s win on Tuesday comes after a win over Tierney in the Democratic Party primary in September.

Moulton press secretary Carrie Rankin told WCVB-TV at 9:28 p.m. that Moulton received a call from Richard Tisei, conceding the race.

Moulton won in Hamilton with 1,617 votes (49 percent) to Tisei’s 1,479 votes (44.9 percent). Independent Chris Stockwell received 130 votes (3.9 percent). Results from Wenham were not available as of early Wednesday morning.

It was Moulton’s first run for publicly elected office. The Marblehead native is a Harvard graduate and Marine that served four tours in Iraq. Tisei is a former state representative and Senator who came within 4,000 of Tierney in 2012. Stockwell had about 6 percent of the vote with less than 50 percent of the precincts reporting.

If elected, Tisei would have been the first Republican elected to the U.S. House from Massachusetts since 1994.

The sixth district includes 39 cities and towns on the North Shore and north of Boston, stretching from Salisbury and Newburyport in the north to Lynn and Swampscott in the south. From east to west, it stretches from Rockport to Bedford, and includes Beverly, Danvers, Gloucester, Peabody and Salem.
