Deadline for Hingham Veterans Tax Incentive Looming

Completed applications MUST be submitted no later than Nov. 15.

Hingham veterans have until the middle of next month to apply for a property tax exemption worth up to $1,000 that they can earn by working for the community.

This spring, Hingham Town meeting unanimously adopted portions of a state law relative to a Veteran’s Tax Work-Off Program, whereby qualified veterans may receive up to a $1,000 property tax exemption for up to 125 hours of work in a fiscal year, as directed by the Hingham Veterans’ Services Officer, Keith Jermyn.

The bill, signed by Gov. Deval Patrick last year, is "An Act Relative to Veterans' Access, Livelihood, Opportunity, and Resources," also known as the VALOR law.

Below are the requirements:

  • The Veteran must be a Hingham resident, and own and reside in their property
  • Priority will be given to Veterans based on eligibility: Income; Age; Assets
  • Selected disabled veterans may utilize a substitute person to perform the work
Applications can be obtained at the Veterans’ Services office on the 2nd floor of Town Hall, or the Town Website: Department of Veterans Services Tab.

Completed applications MUST be submitted no later than Nov. 15, in order to be considered for the program this year. Call 781-741-1440 with any questions regarding this program.
