HULL, MA — A man from Hull will face a judge Monday after police say he crashed a stolen pickup truck into a pole, leaving his passenger dead before taking off from the scene.

Karl Sault, 40, will be arraigned in Hingham District Court on charges including domestic assault and battery, breaking and entering, and intimidation of a witness, the Plymouth District Attorney's Office said.

On Thursday at 10:09 p.m., police received word of a stolen Ford F-150 truck from an autobody shop on Nantasket Ave.

Shortly after, a police officer near the scene of the crime saw a vehicle that matched the description of the stolen one, traveling in the opposite direction of his cruiser.

The officer turned around to follow the suspected truck, but as soon as the car turned from George Washington Boulevard to Rockaway Ave, the car crashed into a pole.

Police say Sault immediately ran away from the crash, but the passenger, later identified as Michael Peters, 52, of Hull, sustained serious injuries. The officer tried to give Peters first aid, but police say they died at the scene.

Hull police were responding to a nearby house on Avalon Drive shortly after the crash for a report of a domestic assault and home invasion.

Sault was located at the house on Avalon Drive, and police matched him to the driver of the stolen truck before placing him under arrest, the district attorney's office said.

The officer at the scene was not injured but was transported to a hospital for an evaluation, and has been placed on paid leave during the investigation.

No further information was released and an investigation remains ongoing.
