Hingham Family Bicycling for Cancer Fundraiser

Cycle for Survival began in 2007 and raised $250,000. In 2013, they raised $14 million.

A Hingham woman and her family are participating in a cycling fundraiser this year with a goal of raising $20,000 for cancer research.

Kristin Buckley and her team Cycle with Hart, founded last year by her cousin, are raising money to support Cycle for Survival and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

They are riding in memory of Buckley's uncle James Hart, Jr. passed away in March 2002 after a brief, five-month battle with cancer. Hart was formerly of Salem but had lived in Plymouth for many years with his wife and three children, Buckley said.

Hart was a army veteran of the Vietnam War and worked for the USPS for many years. He was very active in his community, particularly with his children and coaching their sports teams.

Margaritas Restaurant in Weymouth is donating 15 percent of its sales on Jan. 20 to Cycle for Survival, which funds Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY.

Cycle for Survival was in Boston for the first time in February 2013, at the Equinox Gym in Post Office Square.

Cycle for Hart started with a team of 14, which included Hart's wife (Barbara), daughter (Jillian) and two sons (Tim and Steven), as well as his in laws and many nieces and nephews who raised $7,200, Buckley said.

This year, the team has 16 relatives and have a fundraising goal of $20,000. It has several fundraising efforts underway, including the "Noche Mexicana" at Margaritas.
