Hingham Receives $15,500 in State Recycling Grants

The grants will help pay for school recycling.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has awarded Hingham $15,500 in grants that will go toward school recycling.

The grants, part of the state's Sustainable Materials Recovery Program, will be split into $10,500 for school recycling implementation assistance and an additional $5,000 for school recycling equipment.

"These DEP grants are a key tool in encouraging and aiding our communities to increase recycling, which is beneficial to both our environment and town finances," Sen. Robert Hedlund, R-Weymouth, said in a statement. "I thank Commissioner Kimmell and Secretary Sullivan for their commitment and efforts to this program."

The SMRP directs a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Waste Energy Certificates to municipal, regional and non-profit entities for recycling,
composting, reuse and source reduction activities, according to a release from Hedlund and Rep. Garrett Bradley, D-Hingham.

This year, the SMRP awarded $2.47 million statewide to a total of 137 recipients.

“Recycling is one of the best and most practical ways to preserve our precious natural resources," Bradley said. "Expanding the recycling capacity of Hingham will conserve energy, reduce waste and protect the local environment for future generations."
