"His career, driven by such tenacity, was a tumultuous roller-coaster ride of victory, crisis, defeat, revival, triumph, ruin and, in later life, re-emergence as an elder statesman of the world who traveled widely, wrote copiously and offered advice freely. 'No one,' he told an interviewer in 1990, 'had ever been so high and fallen so low.'"
