Eagle Scout Candidate Helps Local Teens

Hopkinton Resident Alex Kirshy is working with Project Just Because as he reaches for the top of the Boy Scout ladder.

There are plenty of events that mark the passage in to adulthood, high school graduation, getting your license, moving out, for example. For the males in America that chose to participate in Boy Scouts the passage from boy to man is clearly defined by completion of the eagle project and attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

Alex Kirshy, a Hopkinton senior this year, is near the culmination of his journey and he’s working with  to clear the last hurdle.

For Kirshy’s project, he wanted to do something that played to has personality and knack for communication.

“Most scouts do something physical, they build something,” Kirshy said. “I’m an actor and while I love doing those types of projects they just weren’t right for me.”

That’s when he said he got the idea to raise awareness for something. Kirshy went to Cherylann Lambert Walsh and asked her what Project Just Because needed the most.

“She told me she needed donations for the teenage population, and that was somewhere that I knew I could help with.”

Being a teenager himself, Kirshy turns 18 this fall, he knew that this was something he could do.

“I wanted to help jump-start the collection, but the project is more about raising awareness that there is such a need for donations for teenagers than doing a collection.”

Donation boxes are set-up at , the ,  and are welcome at his house (16 Pheasant Hill Rd.). There is also a collection scheduled for Sept. 8 on the Town Common from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donations needed include:

  • Men’s and women’s sneakers (Men's sizes 9-13, Women's sizes 6.5-8)
  • Hoodies (Male and Female, Medium-XL for both)
  • Boxers (Sizes 28-40) and female underwear (Sizes 5-8)
  • Socks
  • Basketballs, footballs, and soccer balls
  • Gift cards to clothing stores (Forever 21, Bob's Stores, Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Target, Visa Cards, Etc.)
