On Feb. 15, most high school students will view a performance of “Dirt” by actor/comedian John Morello. Using a series of stories, this captivating performance helps students and parents understand the core reasons behind substance abuse, and to actually feel the toll it can take on their lives. It also helps parents understand the impact they have on their children's lives through their personal choices and decisions. In general, parents don’t realize the level of influence they have over their children. Especially teenagers, who often wear the "I'm ignoring you" facade, when in fact the truth is usually the opposite.
This powerful performance has been positively received by students and parents across the country. Our health survey data clearly demonstrates that we need to continue to address the problem of substance abuse with our youth.  We invite all parents to view the performance on Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium. It will provide you insight into the choices our children make, and serve as way to engage with your child about this important issue. Please take the time to view this performance.
As characters speak honestly about their experiences the audience understands how seemingly disconnected lives are indeed tied together and influencing each-other. In the end Actor/Comedian John Morello considers himself a survivor of a high risk childhood. Having spent most of his life watching friends and family become victims of destructive decisions he responded by writing the one man show “Dirt”. “Dirt” addresses the core reasons for substance abuse such as self-esteem, depression, and a desire to find a purpose in this often chaotic life.
