Holliston Police Log: Sandy's Destruction, Crowded Soccer Fields

Friday, Oct. 26

6:20 a.m.: A caller reported an erratic motor vehicle on Washington Street. The caller said the driver was often crossing in to the other lane of traffic and nearly hitting other cars. An officer was unable to locate the vehicle.

9:00 a.m.: A resident reported a three-vehicle crash that had occurred earlier in the day.

9:06 a.m.: An officer checked a vehicle parked on Woodland Street. It belonged to a resident who was fishing at the dam.

7:46 p.m.: A caller reported two males fighting in the parking lot of Casey’s Pub. The caller said they heard what sounded like a firecracker. When an officer arrived the area was quiet and the fighters were gone.

8:29 p.m.: A caller reported a suspicious male at Holliston Gas. The caller said the male might have been drunk. An officer responded and arrested Charles J. Lopas, 52, of 342 Village St., Millis. Lopas was charged with possession of an open container in a motor vehicle, fourth offense drunken-driving, and operating with a revoked license.

9:20 p.m.: A caller reported a strong smell of natural gas near Bazel’s Pizza and Subs. An officer responded with the Holliston Fire Department.

11:16 p.m.: An officer responded to a report of a suspicious male wearing black in the woods on Woods Crossing. Officers responded and searched the area.

Saturday, Oct. 27

12:11 a.m.: A caller reported a loose horse on Concord Street.

10:37 a.m.: A resident reported political activists on Washington Street interfering with traffic. An officer responded and advised the activists not to stand in the road.

Continuing: Officers cited multiple vehicles for parking violations near the Marshal Street soccer fields throughout the day.

3:25 p.m.: A caller reported a new sofa, still wrapped in plastic, was in the road on Central Street. A furniture delivery company responded to pick up the sofa, which had fallen off an open truck.

9:13 p.m.: A contractor on Mohawk Path reported that a storage unit had been broken in to.

Sunday, Oct. 28

5:18 p.m.: The Superintendent of Schools canceled school for Monday.

9:42 p.m.: A caller reported receiving harassing test messages. An officer advised the caller of what to do.

Monday, Oct. 29

Continuing: Officers responded to nearly 50 reports of tree limbs causing hazard due to Hurricane Sandy. Many of the incidents required NStar because electric wires were involved. Several streets also had to be closed due to blockages. Some of the incidents can be found below.

9:18 a.m.: An officer responded to a tree that fell on Gorwin Drive and took down wires with it.

12:53 p.m.: A caller reported a snapped telephone pole on Austin Road.

1:37 p.m.: The Highway Department was notified of a tree blocking the road on Wilson Street.

1:38 p.m.: The Holliston Police Department was notified of a tree branch that was sparking against the wires on Chamberlain street.

2:37 p.m.: A caller reported a large tree in the road on Cedar Street.

2:49 p.m.: Officers blocked off Lowland Street after a large limb fell in the road.

4:43 p.m.: An officer blocked off Winter Street after a tree fell on the electric wires.

4:45 p.m.: The fire department responded to a sparking wire on Hollis Street.

7:27 p.m.: Officers responded to a report of wires down across a motor vehicle and a residence on Westfield Drive. NStar was notified.

9:11 p.m.: Officers responded to reports of impassable roads due to flooding at Whitney Street, Locust Street, Baker Street Ashland Street and Jennings Road.
