Hopkinton Landscaper Convicted of Tax Fraud

William A. Reinertson, 51, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper to four counts of filing false tax returns for tax years 2005 through 2008. Had the case proceeded to trial the government’s evidence would have proven that Reinertson operated a landscaping and construction business and received wages as an employee of those businesses. When Reinertson created W-2s for the business, he falsely represented that the business withheld over $200,000 in federal income taxes. In reality, no withholdings had been made and no sums were paid over to the Internal Revenue Service. When Reinertson and his wife filed joint returns using the false W-2s, they claimed that they were entitled to a tax return.

Judge Casper scheduled sentencing for Nov. 29. Reinertson faces up to three years in prison to be followed by one year of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Services Criminal Investigation in Boston made the announcement today.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra S. Bower of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit.
