5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 15

Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend.

1. Police K9 Demo: The Boston Police K9 Academy, which is in Jamaica Plain, is hosting a media-only demo this morning.

2. Weather: Looks like we might finally be easing into spring and not back into winter based on the outlook for the weekend.

3. Book Talk: Aaron Fricke, whose autobiography "Reflections of a Rock Lobster" chronicles his journey from bullied high school student to acclaimed author and activist will speak at a post-show reception on Friday, March 15 at 10:30 p.m. at the Boston Center for the Arts' Calderwood Pavilion. Tickets for the Boston Children's Theatre production of “Reflections of a Rock Lobster,” scheduled for 8 p.m., and for Fricke’s talk are available online.

4. Beer Weekend: This weekend marks the end of Boston Beer Week. There are plenty of beer-friendly places in Jamaica Plain to celebrate. (Hat tip to Streetcar for having many terrific local beverages, for starters). Also, it's St. Patrick's Day weekend.

5. Sing for the Revolution (last day to sign up): The New England Revolution is looking for talented soloists, groups, instrumentalists and other unique musicians to perform the anthem for the team’s 2013 home games at Gillette Stadium. Interested performers can submit their sample performances digitally between now and 4 p.m. on Friday, March 15. A select group of performers from among those submitting samples in advance will be called back for the live final auditions, which will be held at The Lansdowne Pub in Boston, Mass., on Tuesday, March 19, from 6-8 p.m. See here for more information.
