Boston Ice Rink Shuttered Due To February Warmth

Temperatures were approaching 60 degrees Friday, forcing the closure of a Southwest Corridor rink.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — An outdoor ice skating rink in Boston was shut down Friday afternoon due to warmer-than-normal winter temperatures.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation announced near 1 p.m. that the Kelly Outdoor Skating Rink along the Southwest Corridor would close "effective immediately" due to the warmth.

The temperature was sitting at about 58 degrees when the rink was closed, according to the National Weather Service. But temperatures were set to peak at about 63 in the Boston area Friday.

It's possible Boston will break a temperature record for Feb. 10. The all-time record was set in 1990 when the thermometer hit 60 degrees, according to weather service records.

Worcester was already ahead of Boston on the record front. Just before 9 a.m., Worcester hit 56 degrees, beating the old Feb. 10 record of 55 set in 1909.

DCR said the Jamaica Plain rink will likely reopen on Saturday with temperatures set to plunge to near freezing overnight with a daytime high of about 40.
