JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — A man who shot at police officers after an attempted traffic stop in Jamaica Plain is now in critical condition after those officers returned fire early Thursday morning, police confirmed.

Boston Police Superintendent-in-Chief Gregory Long says the incident started just before 1 a.m. when police attempted a traffic stop near Lemuel Shattuck Hospital. He says that before officers could get out of their car, the man abruptly left his car, fleeing on foot, away from the scene.

"During this foot pursuit, the suspect turned around, pointed a firearm at the officers and discharged at the officers, directly at them. At this time, several officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect multiple times," Long said in a statement. "The suspect was transported to a local area hospital with life-threatening injuries."
