Fire incidents:

A Burroughs Road resident reported smoke coming from a conduit in their garage on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11:56 p.m. Bark mulch was burning next to the garage, and a melted plastic conduit ran into the garage. Firefighters noticed the ground was very hot, and an area of dirt was removed to check for underground electrical wiring. An invisible dog fence wire nearby was scorched, but it is unknown if this was the cause. Earlier in the day, the owner's son threw a cigarette into the area, and the father used a hose to wet the area. Firefighters say this may have been the cause, however temperature ground readings led them to call NStar to check underground wires as the electric meter is in the area. NStar reported all systems were normal. No other cause was found, and the area was wet down again.

On Friday, Sept. 3 at 6:53 p.m., a tree and wires were reported down on Blossomcrest Road. NStar and Verizon were notified. Firefighters found that a tree had fallen in a resident's yard, taking down the electric, cable and phone wires. A chainsaw was used to cut branches that were cleared from the driveway to allow a car to get out. Scorching was found at the top of the electric meter. NStar cut power to the house and the downed cable and phone lines lying in the street. Police assistance was requested to block traffic at the end of Blossomcrest. The street was cleared of wires, and all hazards removed.

A Tower Road resident on Friday, Sept. 3 at 8:31 p.m. was cleaning her electric stove and oven when she saw smoke, then flames, coming from below the oven door. She called 911, then left the home with her husband and son. Firefighters found smoke and fire from the stove in the kitchen, and used a dry chemical extinguisher and a water hose line as backup. The fire was knocked down and the stove was shut down. The house was ventilated, and the stove and burned flooring was moved to the driveway. The kitchen cabinets, wall and floor were scorched, and smoke damage was present throughout the home. Firefighters checked for extension of the fire, finding none. Three smoke detectors were checked and found not working or not having batteries.

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, firefighters assisted the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad with an investigation into a suspicious package at Hanscom Air Force Base. An base bomb-sniffing dog had alerted on a vehicle inside the Hanscom gate. The Fire Dept. provided EMS support until the scene was declared safe. Nothing was found.
