Fire Incidents

On Monday, Jan. 31 at 11:56 a.m., the town Building Dept. notified the Fire Dept. of a possible water leak at a home on Bow Street. Firefighters investigated and found water flowing into the basement, causing heavy damage. The basement was pumped into a nearby catch basin, and NStar was requested to shut off electrical power. The Water Dept. was requested to shut off the water down the street. The home was left secure.

A water leak was reported on Monday, Jan. 31 at 5:53 p.m. on Wheeler Road. The resident reported being concerned with snow on the roof potentially causing a leak in the other side of the dwelling, occupied by another resident. Firefighters investigated the attic and found signs of a water dam. No structural damage was noted, no immediate hazards were seen. The owner said they would arrange snow removal, and were advised to call the Fire Dept. with any concerns.

A telephone pole fire was reported on Monday, Jan. 31 at 5:55 p.m. on School Street. The switch box was on fire. NStar was notified. 

A sidewalk plow tipped over onto its side on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2:14 p.m., on Concord Avenue. No injures or spills were reported. Police assisted with safety, as the plow was partially in the street.

A second call on a sidewalk plow that had tipped on its side was received on Simonds Road on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2:32 p.m. The driver had minor injuries. A drying agent was applied to a small spill. A tow company righted the plow.

A broken water pipe causing two feet of water in the basement was reported on Briggs Road on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 8:07 p.m. Firefighters used an electric pump to remove the water. The house water was shut off and drained at the sinks, and the boiler was shut off. The resident was advised.

A broken sprinkler pipe was reported at Munroe Tavern on Mass Avenue on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:04 a.m. The valve had cracked and was leaking. The water was shut off. Water had sprayed the electrical panel, and the electrical inspector was requested at the scene. A 100-gallon propane tank was feeding a heating unit inside the building, and was removed. The Water Dept. shut down the water on the street.

A broken water pipe was reported on Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:39 a.m. on Ledgelawn Avenue. The water was shut off, and a plumber was notified.

A chemical odor was reported on Friday, Jan. 28 at 9:09 a.m. on Wood Street. The resident reported an odor of propane in the garage. Residents of other units also reported the smell. Firefighters found a slight reading for gas near the gas meter. The valve to the meter bars for the property was shut down. The propane company was on scene.

A burst pipe was reported on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7:48 a.m. on Demar Road. A broken water pipe was found in the kitchen, and the water was turned off. The resident was advised to call a plumber.

A carbon monoxide alarm sounded on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 10:36 p.m. on Lowell Street. Readings of 60 to 80 ppm were found on floors one and two, and 150 ppm on floor three. A resident complained of feeling drowsy, and an ambulance was called. A furnace in the basement was found to be causing the problem, and was shut off. The house was vented until readings of zero were reached.

A water problem was reported on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 10:08 a.m. on Butterfield Road. A water supply line to an exterior spigot had burst. The resident had shut off the water to the house. A plumber was called.

A water problem was reported on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 12:02 p.m. on Highland Avenue. A broken baseboard heating pipe was found, and the water and heat were shut down.

An odor of gas was reported on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 4:10 p.m. on Ledgelawn Avenue. No natural gas was discovered in the house. An odor was coming from a gasoline stored in the garage. A leaking gas can had also just been moved from the garage to the outside. No other odors were detected.

An unknown odor was reported on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 10:05 p.m. on Grant Street. The odor was found to be an instant hot water unit under the sink, and caused light smoke. The unit was unplugged, and the owner was to call a plumber to have it removed.
