Get to Know Town Government

Town offers Lexington Citizens Academy for residents to learn workings of town departments.

Information from the the Town Manager's Office on the upcoming Lexington Citizens Academy: 

This fall the Town Manager's Office, in cooperation with Lexington Community Education, invites Lexington residents to attend a program specifically designed to familiarize citizens with the departments and services of Town government.

Through presentations, discussions, and visits to town departments, residents will gain a deeper understanding of how Lexington's town government operates, and the processes and procedures associated with town services, schools, and facilities.

In addition, the academy will promote two-way dialogue between town staff and residents, and enhance public participation by communicating opportunities for involvement.

Participants will attend 10 interactive workshops led by town and school staff at their respective facilities. The first session will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Selectmen's Meeting Room at the Town Office Building.

The following sessions will be held on Sept. 23 and 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28, Nov. 4 and 8. The final session will occur on Monday, Nov. 22 to allow recognition at a Board of Selectmen meeting and a graduation ceremony.

The topics include: an overview of the Town of Lexington, the Town Clerk's Office, Recreation Dept., town financials and budget; Public Works Dept., Emergency Services, Safety Services, Community Development, Schools, Town Meeting and Information Services.

Early registration is suggested as the academy will be limited to 30 participants. Efforts will be made to be inclusive of all age groups. Preference will be given to those with fewer than five years of experience as Town Meeting members, and those who have not previously served on any town boards or committees. There is no fee for attending the academy.
