Malden Leaders Complete Racial Equality Program

MALDEN, MA — The city announced Friday that it has completed the state’s Racial Equity Advancement and Collaborative Hub program.

The program teaches strategies and provides resources to help communities address racial inequalities. Malden was one of 11 municipalities that recently completed the year-long process. The group who participated in the program is known as “Malden United,” and consists of city leaders from a variety of departments. Diversity Equity and Inclusion Coordinator Kashawna Harling, City Clerk Carol Ann Desiderio, Police Lieutenant Michael Powell, Salemwood School Principal Van Huynh, and City Councilor Carey McDonald were just some that made up the diverse roster who underwent the training.

“One of the key tools they explored was the Racial Equity Tool (RET), which helps cities evaluate policies and programs to ensure fairness and inclusion,” Harling explained. “It gave us the tools to help make Malden a place where everyone feels welcome, heard, and comfortable participating, whether as a resident or a city staff member.”
