Malden Speaks: What if You Were King or Queen of the City?

We found out how things would be different if our readers ran Malden.

What if Malden was Westeros, and Malden Patch readers occupied the Iron Throne?

The results, it appears, would be a good deal livelier than any of the current original programming on HBO.

We sent out a Facebook blast asking readers what they would do if they were the unquestioned and feared King or Queen of Malden. Behold: In no particular order, the 10 best responses.

  • “It will be a long day...1. Cease building of all future multi-unit housing. 2. Require every multi-unit house to have an off-street parking space for every car in residence. 3. Eliminate virtually all overnight parking. 4. Require houses converted from single to multi-family to have some owner occupancy. 5. Hire a reliable inspector to check that parking violations are fined. 6. Cancel trash pickup outsourcing, or find a better company. Then, after lunch....” - Christine Nelson-Rivers
  • “Dollar stores and Chinese food aren’t working as an identity for you? I agree. Malden needs something to bring more business in. It’s a shame the ballpark isn’t going to happen. And it’s a shame so many of these new apartment buildings provide nothing of value to our city.” - Michael DiSalvatore
  • “I would get rid of the blue trash bags that cause so much hassle to the people providing them. I would fix the streets. They’re pretty bad. And I would help provide more housing for the people in poverty or low-income households, because they deserve better, too.” - Gabrielle EM
  • “No Malden bags, and we need to crack down on the hard drugs. I’m sick of losing friends to something that shouldn’t even be around.” - Daniel Musker
  • “My wish, just one, would be that our city had a signature business enterprise or identity - one that branded us like at the time of the American Industrial Revolution. We had many companies here, like Converse Rubber, and Elijah Converse and his family left a lot of their fortune to the city. I realize that was old school business and manufacturing. However, this wish would not have apartments and condos as the main economic drivers for a new Malden. My wish would be to have an economic identity or a signature enterprise” - Bob Miller
  • “Make peace with whatever conflict prevented Redbones from coming to Malden, and make it HAPPEN! Okay, now I’m hungry...I can’t believe I have to go to Somerville now..” - Zack Dallaire
  • “Fix the streets! Then off with their heads!” - Janice Whitney
  • “I would give credit where credit is due with the youths of Malden High School. Some of our amazing students deserve to be recognized for all that they do. While keeping up on academics, sports, working and hanging with friends, they also make time and give a helping hand to the special needs students. They do such a wonderful job with unified sports and volunteering for other unified programs over the weekends, I say if anyone’s deserves a headline, it’s the students at Malden High School.” - Michelle Lombardi
  • “Pave Woodland Road. There is no record of when it was paved last, because the previous paving was before they kept records. In the meantime, I have seen other secondary streets repaved after only a couple of years.” - Linda Amato
  • “I’d let everyone who complains about things in Malden answer all the complaints received and fix them..........in one week.” - James Labbe
