First-Day Mansfield Firefighters Save Elderly Man From Fire

The fire was quickly put out and the man was taken to the hospital.

MANSFIELD, MA — Two new firefighters were thrown into a life-saving situation Friday, their first day on the job.

The two, who were working their first day with the department, responded to a house fire on Otis Street Friday morning. The caller reported the fire at 10:55 a.m. and said he was having trouble getting his elderly grandfather out of the house. The new recruits and the rest of the fire crew was able to assist the man out of the home.

The fire was quickly put out, Mansfield Fire said. A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury.

The elderly man was transported to Norwood Hospital for minor smoke inhalation, according to Mansfield Fire.

North Attleboro and Foxborough provided mutual aid and Norton covered the station. Mansfield Police assisted with traffic.
