Mansfield Not Ready For School Choice, Committee Decides

Students from out of town will not be allowed to enroll in the Mansfield Public Schools for the 2018-19 school year.

MANSFIELD, MA — Students from other towns will not be allowed to attend the Mansfield Public School next year, but that could change in the future.

The school committee voted Tuesday to opt-out of School Choice, which allows out of town students to be enrolled in Mansfield schools. The vote came at the recommendation of Superintendent Teresa Murphy, according to the Sun Chronicle.

School Choice is more common in western Massachusetts and Cape Cod where declining enrollment is an issue. Mansfield's student population has been in decline for the past 10 years and Murphy said next year might be the time to look at School Choice.

Funding for students from outside their home district comes from their hometown, which pays up to $5,000 per student.

Committee members Lynn Cavicchi and Jenn Walsh said they want to study the issue further.
