Mansfield Special Town Meeting: What You Need To Know

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming Special Town Meeting in Mansfield.

MANSFIELD, MA — The Special Town Meeting coming up on Tuesday will be a chance for residents to vote on multiple articles addressing budgetary issues in town. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Mansfield High School on East Street.

The following are among the proposals coming before voters:

— To dedicate $30,000 to the Airport Department using funds from Airport Enterprise Retained Earnings

— To pay several unpaid bills, totaling $5,388. The bills relate to the town's personnel, MIS and public works departments.

— To transfer $5,899 of free cash in the town's treasury to eliminate deficits in the Fire and Agency Funds departments

— To appropriate funds for the town's capital improvement projects, including replacement of a fire engine and an ambulance, and upgrading the Plymouth Street fire station. Paving at the schools and a new HVAC controller for Jordan-Jackson Elementary School is also among the projects that would be funded.

— To adopt a Massachusetts law that allows towns to place a lien on property for unpaid municipal fees

— To create a Mansfield Industrial and Development Commission. The commission would consist of five to 15 people, and members would be appointed by the mayor.

— Whether to make the former property of the fire station, at 291 North Main St., available for sale. This proposal comes after the fire station moved to a new location at 500B East St.

— To grant an easement to Verizon New England for operating utility structures at the municipal complex.

— To add a section to the town code pertaining to small wireless facilities. The new section establishes regulations for facilities using the new 5G technology.

— Through a citizen petition, another warrant article asks to remove "billboards or other off-site advertising" from the list of prohibited signs in the town's zoning laws. It proposes allowing a special exception for certain signs.

At Tuesday's Special Town Meeting, each article will be considered for approval through individual motions.
