Ancient Practice Of Tai Chi and Qigong Held On The Beach

Tomorrow, local instructor Ellen Petersen will lead a Tai Chi and Qigong class on Devereaux Beach.

What better way to feel one with nature than partaking in the ancient practice of Tai Chi and  Qigong class while your feet are in the sand and the crash of waves fills the air?

Tomorrow at 6 p.m., Human Harmonies together with The United Martial Arts Center will offer a free Tai Chi and Qigong class on Devereaux Beach for anyone interested in the practice.

"We will do three beach lessons during the summer," Instructor Ellen Petersen said. "The class is in a natural setting, a wonderful environment and Tai Chi is really about the accumulation of chi, or healing energy. This is the perfect chance to get out in nature and be surrounded by the environment and allow yourself to relax your mind."

For those new to the practice, Petersen said Tai Chi is an excellent form of exercise for stress relief and flexibility.

The practice focuses on stretching and breathing exercises to move you toward balance. The movements you learn in Tai Chi can be applied to how you carry yourself in other areas of your life Petersen said.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese system of exercise and meditation that makes the mind and spirit tranquil, improves physical stamina and strength and cultivates health, well being and a long life.

"Relaxing the mind and body are key to Qigong," Petersen said. "Being outside just spoils you. It's wonderful."

Petersen, a black belt, who has been practicing martial arts for 15 years, said she now focuses on Tai Chi and Qigong because of the way it combines the best parts of martial arts.

"Tai Chi and Qigong focus on energies and brings together the physical and mental health and spirituality into one practice," Petersen said. "It's a great way to bring these things into your life in a lovely way with gentle, flowing movement."

With more than 7,000 movements, Petersen said another thing she loves about both of the practices is that it is inclusive.

"Anyone can do it," she says. "It doesn't matter your physical condition, the practice gives anyone those three benefits regardless of physical condition. "

Tomorrow's class is free and open to the public. Petersen encourages everyone to wear comfortable clothing and bring a friend to try the ancient practices out.

"Hopefully, people won't be afraid," Petersen said. "It's very gentle and available for everyone. We gather chi from nature and the earth so being on the beach is the perfect place."

If there is rain tomorrow night, Petersen will reschedule the class to another night.
