August 29 Through September 5

Here is a look at what happened in town this week.

It was back to school for Charter School students this week. While the first day can be a drag for summer loving students, this year the tradition continued and school started with a bang - of gunfire. The gunfire salute was made by members of Glover's Regiment.

On Tuesday, news the bike path near the Marblehead/Salem line may be closed for a year while work is done to clean the land, meant some will have to find an alternate route. The clean up of the site along Lafayette St. will involve trucking the lead contaminated soil out of Marblehead. Work is expected to begin in October.

Also on Tuesday, columnist Darcy Mayers did some fall shopping downtown and found many designer duds for discounted prices.

At Tuesday night's Board of Health meeting, a new committee to investigate the next steps for the landfill was created.

By Wednesday, all eyes turned to the ocean where Hurricane Earl swirled. Emergency Management began preparing for the hurricane which they originally believed, would make a closer hit to the coast line.

Thursday, the heat wave continued and people hit the beach unfazed by the hurricane still threatening the coast.

Friday, the Board of Health announced all beaches were re-opened after high bacteria levels were found last week.

In a surprise announcement, Patricia Blackmer resigned from chair of the School Committee. Eurim Chun is now Chair.

Saturday brought but few other effects from Earl.

The Labor Day weekend continued with sunshine and plenty of local activities to take part in.
