Latest Scam Targets Town's Water, Electric Customers

Customers of the town's Electric Light and Water and Sewer department are being warned of a new telephone scam.

The IRS scammers continue calls to Marblehead residents as the Electric Light and Water and Sewer department both issue a scam warning on Monday.

The latest scam involves callers demanding money with threat that if they are not paid they will shut off utilities.

Both departments issued a warning reminding customers to only only make payments to the address listed on their utility bill.

“While most of the victims targeted have been businesses, we are starting to see calls to residences as well,” both town departments said in the joint scam warning.

Neither the Electric Light Department or the Water and Sewer Department accept payment over the phone, by wire transfer or through PayPal, they said.

The latest utility scam comes on the heels of a similar scam where callers say they are from the Internal Revenue Service and demand back of back taxes with the threat of arrest.

Those calls have continues all summer to Marblehead residents, who are encouraged to report it to the Federal Trade Commission.
