Marblehead Abbot Public Library Open House Celebrates Renovation

The public is invited to light the fireplace and see the benefits of the historic library's $10 million renovation.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Marblehead residents are invited to an open house at the historic Abbot Public Library to celebrate the recently completed $10 million renovation and the front walkway project.

Members of the staff and Board of Trustees will light the fireplace in honor of the renovations and the start of the winter season.

Hot chocolate, tea, coffee and cookies will be served.

The open house is scheduled for this upcoming Wednesday — Dec. 11 — in the fireplace room from 11 a.m. to noon.

Abbot Public Library reopened on July 10 after a renovation funded by an $8.5 million debt service property tax override and an additional $1.5 million in private donations from the Abbot Public Library Foundation.

This contribution represents the continuation of the public-private partnership between the library and the community of Marblehead that began 146 years ago.

The renovation includes three new meeting rooms with presentation screens audiovisual improvements, an accessible entrance at the courtyard, a makerspace and podcasting studio, self-checkout kiosks, digital sign displays, improved wireless connectivity, new security and fire alarm systems, renovated HVAC and four new gender-neutral bathrooms.

The final certificate of occupancy was received on Wednesday.
