Marblehead Man Killed In Vermont Bike Race Collision

Vermont State Police said Richard Wanstall was killed on Saturday morning after he collided with a truck during a local bike race in Burke.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — A Marblehead man participating in a local bike race in Vermont was killed Saturday morning when he apparently crossed into the path of an oncoming pickup truck, according to Vermont State Police.

Police said on Saturday morning that Richard Wanstall was struck at the intersection of Brook Road and Carter Road in the small Northeast Kingdom town. Police said in a news release that a preliminary investigation indicated that Wantall was riding in the southbound lane of Brook Road as part of the race when he then veered into the northbound lane and was struck.

Police said Alex Goss, an East Haven, Vermont resident, was driving the 2007 Dodge truck that struck Wanstall head-on. Wanstall was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"At this time, neither speed nor impairment are believed to be contributing factors in the collision," Vermont State Police said. "The incident is still under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information about the collision is asked to contact the Vermont State Police."
