MARBLEHEAD, MA — Saying Marblehead Public Schools need a "transformative leader," the School Committee unanimously voted to offer the superintendent's position to Nantucket High School Principal John Buckey. Buckey topped the other finalist, Watertown schools Assistant Superintendent Theresa McGuinness. His appointment is pending successful contract negotiations.

Former Marblehead schools Superintendent Maryann Perry retired at the end of the 2018-19 school year after fallout regarding how school officials paid about $600,000 of 2018 bills with 2019 funds. An audit showed school officials broke state finance law, as they never received permission from Town Meeting. The deficit was tied to special education out-of-district tuition.
