Marblehead Schools Paying Staff During Coronavirus Shutdown

The Marblehead school community unanimously approved a measure to continue paying hourly workers during the state-ordered shutdown.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — The Marblehead school committee voted 5-0 to continue paying hourly employees through the state-ordered shutdown of schools.

The vote was taken Tuesday during a conference call with school committee members, principals, superintendent Bill McAlduff and parents. Gov. Charlie Baker ordered schools closed for at least three weeks beginning Monday in an effort to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

If the closures extend past the three weeks, hourly employees may be asked to assist teachers iwth projects or take part in professional development activities. Food service employees have continued to work after Marblehead expanded its school lunch program.
