MARBLEHEAD, MA — Gilbane Building Company's winning bid to build the new Malcom L. Bell Elementary School in Marblehead not only came in under the $40.1 million budget, but with a faster-than-anticipated schedule. That means students could move into the school as early as Sept. 2021, a full year ahead of original projections. Gilbane's winning bid calls for completion by December 2021, but the company said it was possible the school could be ready for move-in by the start of the 2021-22 school year.

The project calls for building a 450-seat elementary school that brings the Upper and Lower Bell, Coffin and Gerry schools under a single roof. All six firms that submitted bids said they would complete the school by December 2021 at the latest.
