Nolan Raimo Running To Fight Cancer

Nolan Raimo is this week's Whiz Kid.

Each week, Marblehead Patch highlights a different Whiz Kid in the community. To nominate someone you know to be our Whiz Kid, e-mail Katherine@Patch.com

This week's whiz kid is Nolan Raimo. After losing his dad Charlie to colon cancer, Raimo is raising money for Mass General Cancer clinic.

This week's Whiz Kid was nominated by Jodi Vigneron. In her nomination, Vigneron said, "following Charlie's death in 2009 after a long battle with colon cancer, Nolan started Running for a Cure, a fundraiser to help raise money for cancer research and clinics."

"His father had been his inspiration for running track," Vigneron said. "Charlie also ran track when he attended Marblehead High School from 1971-1973. He was the record holder of the 110 meter hurdle race until just recently. Nolan hopes to break this record one day."

What Makes Nolan So Awesome? Nolan will be Running for a Cure for the second  year. Last year he raised $10,000 for Mass General Cancer clinic. This year he is hoping to equal that amount.

Nolan will be competing in the All-State High School Pentathlon this month. The pentathlon is comprised of five events. The 55 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and 1000 meter run. His goal (besides winning the Pentathlon) is to raise funds for cancer clinics, and research.

Supporters are asked to pledge a penny per point or a a penny per 2 points (By emailing Nolan the pledge). Nolan then runs the All-State Pentathlon  and will score anywhere from 2700-3100 points. After the race, Nolan will email the people back, and then they mail checks to him which he then brings to Mass General.
