MARBLEHEAD, MA —Police and other officials helped a Marblehead man mark his 100th birthday Monday.

Sidney Rose graduated from the Naval Academy in 1943 and served on a submarine in the Pacific during World War II. While Rose was raised in North Dakota, he has lived in Marblehead since 1949.

In addition to a surprise, socially-distanced visit and salute from Marblehead police officers, Marblehead’s Veterans Agent Dave Rodgers organized a three-cannon salute for Rose from Grace Oliver’s Beach, Crowninshield Road and Browns Island. Rose was also presented an official Marblehead Police challenge coin.
