Six Local Spots Make State List

It's no secret to residents that places such as Castle Rock, Abbot Hall and Chandler Hovey Park are locations not to miss in town, but now those places may soon have more visitors. 

This is because those locales along with Fort Sewall, Marblehead Lighthouse and The Jeremiah Lee Mansion are included on the list released by the state today of 1,000 great places to visit in Massachusetts. 

The list was created by a committee of lawmakers from all regions of the state as well as tourism experts and aimed to include places that make the Bay State special. Every location on the list is also open to the public.

The final list was whittled down from nearly 13,000 nominations submitted by citizens.

Executive Director of the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce Anne Marie Casey,  said she is thrilled the list includes not only Marblehead but places otherwise unknown.

"The list really encompasses the commonwealth," Casey said. "I'm from Willmington and I'm happy to see some locations included. Wilmington is not typically a tourist destination."

Casey said the list is a good incentive for people, no matter where they live, to see what is in their backyard.

"This is a wonderful list the legislature put together. Any incentive to boost tourism is a good move," she said.

Already this summer, Casey said she has noticed the trend of "staycations" picking up steam. Rather than pay for a pricey trip abroad or out of state, locals are choosing to stay stateside and tour some of the locations, such as those included on the list of 1,000 great places.

"In response to the trend, we're doing our part to create new partnerships," Casey said. 

New this year, Marblehead Chamber, visitor's booth and other locations are stocking brochures for places such as Nantucket or Central Massachusetts.

"The places we have brochures for also have Marblehead brochures," Casey said. "This is all in response to keeping it local."
